Serena’s 7th Wimbledon win equals Graf’s 22 Grand Slam titles

Serena Admiring her trophy
Possibly, the greatest female tennis player of all time, Serena Williams, has equaled Steffi Graf’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.

Serena equaled the German’s record on Saturday as she defeated Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3, in what was a tense final.

It was third time lucky for the 34-year-old American, who had earlier in the year reached the Australian Open final, where she lost to Kerber.

In May, she also lost the French Open final in straight sets to Garbine Muguruza.

But even with 15 unforced errors in the first set that went to a tiebreak, Serena held her nerve to win 7-5.

“I just love playing Angelique [Kerber] because she makes me play great tennis and once we walk off the court, she is such a wonderful person to be around – that smile so…,” Serena told the Wimbledon centre court audience.

With a wide smile etched on her face, as it was announced that she had finally equaled Graf’s record, Serena just uttered, “It has been an incredible exercise not to think about it.

“I had a couple of tries this year and lost to two great opponents – one of them being Angelique. But it makes this victory even sweeter…”

“I know how hard I worked,” Serena said as she turned to the spectators and thanked them for being around to witness history.

She then agreed that Wimbledon sure felt like a second home after a seventh triumph at SW19.

There were some tender words for elder sister, Venus, with whom she would be competing for the Ladies doubles event later on Saturday.

She mentioned that she had been greatly inspired by Venus, who got to the semi-final before Kerber ousted her.

But knowing Serena, she would not be resting on this laurel, but would already be planning for the US Open where she can take her haul of Grand Slam title wins to 23.

When a report mentioned that she was arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time, Serena replied “one of the greatest athletes…”. And that is who Serena is!
