Arsenal announced the signings of Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez from La Liga outfits Valencia and Deportivo yesterday.

Some of the key issues regarding Arsenal’s transfer business over the years have been Wenger’s reluctance to spend, his willingness to sign unproven talents and of course the lack of leadership and experience.

The Arsenal manager has not only addressed those issues, he has plugged almost all of the major gaps in his squad this summer.

Early signs suggest Chelsea are serious contenders for 2016-17 Premier League title - Soccerlens

hazard

Chelsea had a middling 2015-16 season to put it very mildly. The incumbent champions leapt from one crisis to another both on and off the field and finished the season in the 10th place, which was unthinkable when the season began. The tone of the season, however, was set in the early days with the club playing an uninspiring brand of football and the manager (Jose Mourinho) getting into a distasteful controversy with the team doctor.

The appointment of Antonio Conte as the new man in the helm for this season was good news for the fans. Here was a man who in charge of Juventus and Italy had shown good tactical nous coupled with a strict disciplinarian approach. While that makes him similar to Mourinho, the area of dissimilarity was the lack of controversy with Conte. Chelsea were getting a new manager who had the good traits of the “Special One”, minus the baggage. The summer transfer window till date has helped to shore up some of the cracks in the squad, with N’Golo Kante slotting in the engine room of the midfield and Michy Batshuayi providing an able substitute striker for Diego Costa.

Manchester City continued their superb start to the season with a 3-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side brushed the Hammers aside thanks to a brace from the rejuvenated Raheem Sterling.

The young England winger has been severely criticised for his form since his move from Liverpool.

But Sterling has improved considerably since the arrival of Guardiola. The England international has been constantly criticised for his finishing but the young attacker was in fine form against Slaven Bilic’s side yesterday.

Arsene Wenger confirms £52m Arsenal double swoop as pair pass medicals but still receives criticism

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has all-but ended the wait for new signings this week, but continues to come under scrutiny from supporters.

The French tactician has been heavily criticised for his lack of activity in the summer transfer window, as Granit Xhaka had been his only notable signing with a week to go before the deadline.

However, as reported by ESPN FC, the Gunners are on the verge of completing the signings of Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi from Deportivo La Coruna and Valencia respectively this week.

ChampionsLeagueTrophy
THE UCL CUP
Thursday’s Champions League draw was very kind to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs were seeded third but avoided a Group of Death scenario.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich and Juventus were possible opponents from Pot 1, but Spurs were instead paired with Russian champions CSKA Moscow.

Although a trip to Moscow is not ideal in terms of logistics, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will fancy their chances of coming out on top against CSKA.

Nigeria League Review: Wikki Tourists reclaim top spot

Wikki Tourists of Bauchi are back at the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League table after their 2-1 win over MFM FC on Sunday.

It was Godwin Obaje who scored the two goals for Wikki on Sunday; first heading in the ball off an assist by Mustapha Ibrahim in the 18th minute.

The striker was on hand again in the 36th minute to complete his brace as he doubled Wikki’s lead when he poked in the ball from a goalmouth melee.

Though MFM through Austine Ogunye pulled one back in the second half, it was not enough to deny Wikki maximum points in the Match Day 31 tie.
