Allardyce fights to save England job

Sam Allardyce
Sam Allardyce is set for crisis talks with his Football Association employers on Tuesday as the England manager fights to save his job after being caught in a newspaper sting.

Allardyce gave advice on how to circumnavigate transfer rules, criticised the FA’s decision to rebuild Wembley and mocked his England predecessor Roy Hodgson while being secretly filmed by Daily Telegraph reporters posing as Far East businessmen.

Allardyce, 61, appointed England manager in July on a £3m-a-year contract, also agreed to travel to Singapore and Hong Kong as an ambassador for their fictitious firm for a fee of £400,000 ($519,000, 461,000 euros).

Senior FA figures were said to be stunned by the revelations and the former Sunderland and West Ham manager was seen driving away from his home in Bolton, northwest England, early on Tuesday morning amid reports he had been summoned to the governing body’s Wembley headquarters to defend himself.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has helped to put the blockbuster feel back into Manchester United and the striker who has promised to become a footballing god to the club’s fans offered an illustration of his patented sense of occasion.

The curtain-raiser to the Premier League season had been engaging enough, marked by Jesse Lingard’s marvellous solo goal and a deserved Leicester City equaliser from Jamie Vardy, but it looked to be sliding towards a rather artificial penalty shootout conclusion.
Enter Zlatan. The free-agent signing from Paris Saint-Germain had successfully executed a back-heel with his first touch in the early running – the Swede is addicted to the extravagant. But it was what he did in the 83rd minute that represented his setting down of a marker.

Allardyce’s rise to the biggest job in English football went through spells at Blackpool, Notts County, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and the Black Cats.

A statement from Allardyce read: “I am extremely honoured to be appointed England manager especially as it is no secret that this is the role I have always wanted.

Sam Allardyce set to be named England manager after FA board meeting

Sam Allardyce’s appointment as England’s new manager on a two-year contract is set to be ratified on Thursday after the outgoing Sunderland manager convinced the Football Association of his ability to rediscover the national team’s “missing identity”.
A meeting of the FA’s National Board at Wembley will rubber-stamp the decision already made by the ruling body’s recruitment panel of Martin Glenn, Dan Ashworth and David Gill that was mandated to identify Roy Hodgson’s successor. That trio were particularly impressed by Allardyce’s innovative, pioneering use of psychology.

FA willing to wait to appoint Arsene Wenger as England boss next year

FA willing to wait to appoint Arsene Wenger as England boss next year

FA chief executive Martin Glenn has hinted at the possibility that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could become the next long-term England manager.

Roy Hodgson announced his resignation in the immediate aftermath of Monday night’s shock 2-1 loss to Iceland in Nice at Euro 2016, thus paving the way for a successor to be announced.

However, the FA are keen to take their time with the decision to bring in the right man after yet another failure at a major tournament has left them in disarray.

A three-man committee of Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and former Manchester United chief executive David Gill will now carry out the task of appointing a new manager, and that process could see them wait for Wenger’s deal at Arsenal to expire next summer before confirming him as the new boss.
