Memphis Depay: Lyon agree £14.7m deal to sign Manchester United forward

Memphis Depay

French club, Lyon, have agreed to a deal to sign Manchester United forward, Memphis Depay. The Red Devils have agreed to sell him for around €17m (£14.75m), with the fee capable of rising to €25m if a series of add-ons are triggered.

United rejected a £13m bid from Lyon earlier this month. However, it seems the two clubs have reached an agreement after Lyon improved their offer in the second bid.

According to reports from the Guardian, United will have a buy-back option as well as sell-on clauses inserted into the deal. Depay joined United from PSV Eindhoven for £25m in the summer of 2015 under Louis van Gaal, but has struggled to make a strong impact for José Mourinho.

The 22-year-old has featured just eight times for United under Mourinho, but has started only once, in an EFL Cup win at Northampton back in September. His last appearance for the club came against Feyenoord in the Europa League on November 24. In total, he has made 53 appearances for United and scored seven goals.
Premier League club, Everton, who signed Morgan Schneiderlin from United earlier this month, were also reportedly interested in signing Depay. The Dutch winger is set to become the second big-name departure from the club this month.

Even if all the clauses are fulfilled, United will still incur a small loss on the player. However, Depay was guaranteed to earn a minimum of around £75,000 a week until June 2019, so United can now be free of his wage bill. The two major departures have freed up the space for United, and it remains to be seen whether Mourinho signs any new player in the remaining days of the winter transfer window.
